Ta'anos 010a: When we start saying "v'Sen Tal u'Matar"

Mark Kerzner <mkerzner70@hotmail.com> asked:

Dear Rabbi Kornfeld: BSD

In the Artscroll edition of Taanis, the dates are quoted as December 5 or

6, not 4 or 5, as in the Artscroll Siddur. This is a stira.

Besides, I have also heard in a Daf Yomi lecture a few years ago that the 4

or 5 of December were calculated by the author of Kitzur Shulchan Oruch,

Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried, and that since then the calculated date changed by

1, thus making it December 5 or 6.

Have you heard of these opinions? Is it connected to the question of 60 days

being 60*24 hours, or 60 days?

Thank you. Sincerely,

Mark Kerzner

The Kollel replies:

Good question. The issue is not related to the question of 60 days after the

Tekufah, or 60 periods of 24 hours after the Tekufah.

Rather, the issue is merely a matter of how to count the English dates.

The Jewish date begins at nightfall, while the secular date begins at

midnight.

If I tell you that we start saying "v'Sen Tal u'Matar" in Ma'ariv [1] of December 4, what does that mean? Does that

mean the night *going into* December 4 [2], or does that mean the night *near

the end* of December 4 [3]?

When the ArtScroll Sidur says that the date [4] is December 4,

that means that we begin saying v'Sen Tal u'Matar after December 4, during

the night going into December 5.

When the ArtScroll Ta'anis says that the date [5] is December

5, that also means the night going into December 5 [6].

When the KITZUR SHULCHAN ARUCH was first published [7], they were saying

v'Sen Tal u'Matar on the night going into December 4, while the actual date

was still December 3. In the year 1900, when no leap year was made [8], the date of 60 days after the

Tekufah consequently moved up one day -- to "December 5" in the words of the

footnotes on the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, meaning that we say v'Sen Tal u'Matar

on December 4, during the night going into December 5.

I hope this clarifies your question.

All the best,

Y. Shaw
